The Numbers: A Summary of Month 9

And here we are, dear Reader, NINE MONTHS into Our Brat Experiment. An entire whole baby if we had been pregnant (which gives me new found respect for pregnancy – shows in concrete terms for an outsider how long it really is!!) It was also our second to last month in Korea and so we are now into the final push of saving as much as we possibly can while still having the amazing benefits Korea gives us (namely: very cheap health care, no tax and living rent free). Month 8

Our first Christmas during Our Brat Experiment 🙂 And because I have started tracking what we have left in the budget (as opposed to simply what we have spent), I already know that things didn’t go entirely to plan… Which of course makes me not want to write this post very much. But I will trooper forth! We now have only two months left of our BEAUTIFUL Korean salaries and so I’m extra motivated to see exactly how we did and make sure that we are on track to reach our savings target. So let’s jump in!

Month 7

This has been a strange month. It was our first month since we started Our Brat Experiment where we gave ourselves permission to not save as much as possible. This was with our buy-winter-clothes plan. We also decided to reward ourselves with a trip to Thailand and, here’s the big step dear Reader, acknowledge that it was actually part of our spending (as opposed to some exceptional case like we did with our Malaysian trip). This has meant that our savings rate has dropped SIGNIFICANTLY this month (we hoped to save 56% [down from our usual 66%] but instead only saved 42%). The other thing is that we went over budget… but never fear! There are always lessons to be learnt and great songs to listen to (this is my new favourite one): Paper Girl by July Talk 🙂  Continue reading

A celebration tree to mark SIX MONTHS of Our Brat Experiment 🙂

Whaaaaaaaat?! We have OFFICIALLY been doing Our Brat Experiment for SIX MONTHS?! Wow. I can’t actually believe that we have done it for so long. When we first started this journey I was desperately hoping that the blog would help us stay accountable and keep us on track… but I never dared to hope that we would stick at it for an entire SIX MONTHS. And with no sign of stopping either 🙂 Yay 🙂

The Numbers: A Summary of Month 4

Month 4 baby! 🙂 And we are going to celebrate but starting to include less detail in this monthly report. This is because it really feels like we have a handle on our spending culture by now so we no longer need so much detail. If you would like to see the details of this month then please check out Week 14, Week 15, Week 16, Week 17 and our Malaysia trip. If you are new to The Brat Experiment and want to see monthly summaries in more detail then feel free to check out Month 1, Month 2 and Month 3.

Ignoring our spending money for Malaysia (because that came out of what we normally would have saved rather than our day-to-day budget), we actually came in 275 936 won under budget 🙂 And that was with a trip to Seoul, eating out a LOT and spending quite a bit on gifts. Super stoked 🙂 I have no doubt that not being in South Korea for 10 days helped a lot though. Either way, our current budget is treating us well and we have some extra money from Month 4 so we are going to up our savings for Month 5. The send-it-to-savings-the-moment-you-get-your-salary-and-maak-‘n-plan (translation: make a plan) for the rest of the month approach is working really well for us so that’s what we will do again in Month 5 too. So wish us luck, especially given that I’d like to try and be more of a tourist in South Korea this coming month 🙂

The Numbers: A Summary of Month 2

I cannot believe that we are only 2 months into our Brat Experiment. I feel like we have been doing this for so much longer… It has become so much a part of us and how we view the world… Still amazes me how quickly that happened.

Anyway, here we are at the end of Month 2. As with last month’s summary I have kept a lot of detail because we are still new at this Brat Experiment and the detail gives us a better idea of our spending culture (and maybe fellow Korean dwellers will find it useful too).

Firstly, what a massive improvement on last month! Last month we were 505 910 won over budget and we have more than halved that this month 🙂 Our ratio of necessity vs indulgence isn’t as good as last month though (78% vs 86% last month) but I’m ok with that given that we spent so much less money this month and that in the last week we aimed to enjoy life a bit more (by spending a bit more). Overall our ratio of necessity vs indulgence seems to hover around 80% vs 20% which is wonderful – we’re being frugal but are still making room to enjoy life (by spending more) from time to time 🙂

Travelling TOTAL: 275 800 won – well under budget J

 Which means:

MONTH 2 TOTAL (day to day & travel): 1 483 965 won (516 035 won UNDER budget)

This is incredible because it means that we have gone from being 318 210 won OVER budget last month to 516 035 won UNDER budget this month! 🙂 Yaaaaaaaaay! Why exactly I’m not actually sure yet… but I’m starting to feel the need for graphs to track the differences from month to month… look at my financial nerd coming out!! 😉

Anyway, because we knew that we were under budget for the month and because we had thought long and hard about these purchases (more than 30 days as is recommended by Get Rich Slowly) and because we had researched them extensively we bought:

  • Travel backpack for Husband: 93 000 won (on a 50% sale too!)
  • Waterproof camera: 355 110 won (a dream for YEARS)
  • Camera bags for my polaroid camera and waterproof: 13 500 won

For a grand total of 461 610 won (still under budget for the month at 1 945 575 won total). In other words, because we came in under budget we were able to buy things that we had thought long and hard about without it impacting on our savings rate. Just brilliant 🙂

Big picture stuff 🙂 I have kept a lot of detail though because we are so new at this Brat Experiment and I think that the detail gives us a better idea of where we are spending money and where we can reduce (and maybe fellow Korean dwellers will find it useful too). I am hoping that I can drop all the detail once we have a better idea of our spending/saving culture.

At first glance: not great. We were hoping to spend only 1 million won and instead spent just over 1.5 million won. However, we did reduce our eating out really drastically so that’s great. Also, we realized this hasn’t been a typical month. We’re hoping the clothes shopping will be a once-off (we’ve just moved to Korea and it’s just not possible to bring everything you need for a year in one bag – especially when you arrive in the frigid temperatures of winter) and that the once-off section won’t find other once offs 🙂 Also our bills should reduce by about 100 000 won because our gas bill and Husband’s school lunch was actually for two months. Taken all together that’s 449 190 won we’re hoping we won’t have to pay in Month 2 – and suddenly we’re only 50 000 won over budget 🙂

However, the most significant thing for me is that with each passing week our ratio of necessary vs indulgent improves. This is truly cartwheel-fantastic because it means that we’re learning and improving our spending/saving culture weekly i.e. we’re on the right path and heading in the right direction – whohoooooo! 🙂

 Travel:

Now this gets a bit complicated. Long before we started the Brat Experiment we had decided that with our April salaries one of us would buy tickets to Malaysia for our August holiday – which we did. This technically counts as travel. BUT if we hadn’t bought those tickets that money would have gone straight to savings. So in our heads we’re not counting those flights as coming out of our travel budget – instead they are from LBTBE (Life Before The Brat Experiment).

I’m thrilled because we came in under our travel budget. But I must admit travelling just around Korea costs a lot more than I thought it would… However, again there was an improvement in our necessary vs indulgent ratio and so I have faith that our spending while travelling within Korea with reduce with time 🙂

The moral of the story? Some highs. Some definite lows. But all evidence suggesting that we are learning and improving. So all in all, not a bad first month J What do you think, dear Reader?
