Week 39 & Week 40

We arrived back in Korea on Friday the 3rd and so I thought that I would just do my usual thing and join that weekend with the following week, making it a longer than usual week. But when I started doing the numbers I realized that we spent so much during that weekend that it really deserves its own write-up. Plus, I think it’s interesting to see our spending in more detail for this last month of Korea because, as I said in Month 9, it has definitely changed. This last month we have gone from “we live here” spending brains to “we’re leaving soon and so must experience everything one last time” spending brains. Let’s take a closer look:

To new readers of The Brat Experiment: Husband and I track every single Korean won that we spend (we’re currently living in South Korea) on a fantastic app called Money Lover. The app is synched to both of our phones and means that it’s very easy to see where all of our money goes (which is not always pleasant!). I then report on our weekly spending here and write up a summary of our spending for each month. You can check out other weekly spends and the monthly summaries in The Numbers section.

Total Explained – remember this is in the space of one weekend!

Once-Off 262 000 This was: 100 000 won on Korean artwork (4 paintings of the 4 extremely distinct Korean seasons) and 162 000 won on the most beautiful Korean tea set. Both indulgent. But both gorgeous and 100% worth it.

Week 40 1 900 742
Groceries 103 240
Eat Out 40 000 Husband paid for lunch for his co-teacher (culturally appropriate) and we had dinner out while watching fireworks for the Winter Olympic Games next year.

Once-Off 99 600 Most of this was an indulgent, but super pretty, pair of shoes I bought for 53 100 won. The rest was dry cleaning, boxes for moving and other necessary-leaving things.
Bills & Fees 162 761 Building management fee and internet…
Transport 21 200 Again with the indulgent taxis!
Gifts 25 600 Buying things that people want us to send while we still have access to it in Korea. So again, a leaving related expense.
Medical 3 500
Local Travel 0
Overseas Travel 1 444 841 This is massive, I know! But it’s our flights back to South Africa (which we haven’t bought yet because we still waiting to hear about my job interview I got in New Zealand!) and 100 000 won for accommodation in Bangkok.
Christmas 0

Check that pile of cleared snow!

Week 40 total: 1 900 742 won (455 901 won without the flights and Bangkok accommodation)

Necessary: 1 818 342 won (96%)

Indulgence: 82 400 won (4%)

Now let’s see how that all works into our plan for the month:

A bit of a shock that we have spent so much already… But of course the flights are going to make it look like a big whack! I must just remind myself that they’re a planned and budgeted for whack so it’s ok. If we pretend that Week 39 was more than just one weekend then the 459 252 won spend isn’t tooooooooo bad – hahahaha! We have friends arriving tonight (YAY!) and staying until Sunday so that will increase our spending but it’s going to be a beautiful full-circle ending to our time in Korea: they are just starting their time in Korea and so we can introduce them to all the things that we have loved about it but at the same time bid farewell to everything as well. How awesome is that? Thank you universe 🙂

Hope that you had a wonderful Valentine’s Day, dear Reader! Husband and I celebrated by having a candle lit dinner at home without the TV on – proving that quality, fantastical romance doesn’t require lots of admin or money 🙂 🙂 Yay us 🙂

P.S. I’m so sorry about the delay in the Thailand post! I will get it up as soon as I can 🙂
