Hello, dear Reader! It has been SO long since I wrote! The main reason for this is that we have just spent 10 glorious days in Thailand ❤ (But more on this in a future post in my brat travel section). I had fully intended to this Week 38 post and the end of the month post before we left, as well as give you a heads up that things would be quiet on here for a while… but then a wonderful and terrifying thing occurred: I got a job interview 😀 For a job that I REALLY want. Like dream stuff. And in New Zealand. So out went all good intentions and in came frantic studying, researching and prepping 😀 I had the interview the Monday we flew to Thailand (over the phone, the fantastic and practical souls) and will hear from them Friday next week. So please hold thumbs, dear Reader, and accept my apologies for my silence here. So with that, let’s look at how we did the last week of the month:
To new readers of The Brat Experiment: Husband and I track every single Korean won that we spend (we’re currently living in South Korea) on a fantastic app called Money Lover. The app is synched to both of our phones and means that it’s very easy to see where all of our money goes (which is not always pleasant!). I then report on our weekly spending here and write up a summary of our spending for each month. You can check out other weekly spends and the monthly summaries in The Numbers section.
|Week 38||1 484 720|
|Groceries||175 590||We did MASSIVE shop because we had friends coming to spend the weekend and we wanted to give them as much of the South African experience as we could in Korea. But then it started snowing on Friday. Like buckets. With thunder and lightning even. And all hopes of our friends travelling to us were squashed flat by the most beautiful, deep, pristine snow. And then Husband and I had the task of trying to eat all the food we had bought before we left for Thailand on Monday! Haha! 🙂|
|Eat Out||65 500||We went out for dinner with one of my co-teachers.|
|Clothes||69 800||We did a tad more winter clothes shopping… All good investments that we will use in New Zealand though I think.|
|Once-Off||9 400||A 2017 diary for Husband and studying stationary for me.|
|Bills & Fees||154 730||The usual end of month stuff: gas, internet and both our phones.|
|Transport||3 500||Taxi home from our big shop.|
|Overseas Travel||1 006 200||This was effectively 900 000 won converted for spending money in Thailand, 60 000 won for the bus to the airport and 46 200 won on snacks and food getting to and at the airport.|
Week’s total: 1 484 720 won (478 520 won without Thailand)
Necessary: 1 200 420 won (81%)
Indulgence: 284 300 won (19%)
(Check the snow we had! It was by far the biggest snowstorm that we have ever seen!)
So, with the exception of Thailand, a pretty normal last week of the month J Now let’s look at how this all fitted into our plan for the month:
I am THRILLED with the fact that our living costs were over 500 000 won below budget 😀 I don’t really understand why though…. Hopefully that will come to light when I look at the month as a whole. Our Thailand spend is a glaring overspend though… but this was partly intentional because we knew that we were under budget for the month and so chose to take more spending money in Thailand than originally planned. And thank goodness we did because it turned out that we had vastly underestimated how much spending money we would want in Thailand!!
