Week 37

Coffee at the beach

Hello, dear Reader! I so hope that you are happy and had a great weekend 🙂 We had such an awesome weekend with wonderful friends staying with us Friday night and Saturday day and then being lazy blobs (complete with a Sunday afternoon nap!) on Sunday – the perfect weekend balance 🙂 We now find ourselves back at work (with NO students), doing nothing but keeping our desks warm for 3 days and then we’re on holiday – yay! 🙂 We’re having friends to stay this weekend and then we fly to Thailand on Monday – happy, happy days ahead 🙂 So let’s take a look at how our spending went last week…

Also, as a side note, it has been kak cold this week!!

To new readers of The Brat Experiment: Husband and I track every single Korean won that we spend (we’re currently living in South Korea) on a fantastic app called Money Lover. The app is synched to both of our phones and means that it’s very easy to see where all of our money goes (which is not always pleasant!). I then report on our weekly spending here and write up a summary of our spending for each month. You can check out other weekly spends and the monthly summaries in The Numbers section.

Total Explained
Week 37 307 470
Groceries 201 130 Nothing unusual. But we did have friends stay with us so we splashed out on some yummy ingredients for our home cooking 🙂
Eat Out 12 000 I had a lunch party with my students to wrap up our two weeks of conversation class. It was awesome 🙂
Clothes 0
Alcohol 0
Once-Off 18 600 Our kettle spontaneously and definitively died. So we had to replace it. A month and a half without tea is inconceivable.
Bills & Fees 740 A sms fee…
Transport 14 800 Higher than usual. Mostly taxis back from big shops.
Gifts 0
Medical 0
Local Travel 60 200 This was actually a date night 🙂 On Wednesday night we went out for dinner (but a cheap gimbap one) and went to the movies 🙂
Overseas Travel 0
Christmas 0

Week’s total: 307 470 won

Necessary: 266 770 won (87%)

Indulgence: 40 700 won (13%)

The big learning curve for last week was how easy it is to spend money. We never dreamt that we would spend 60 000 won on one evening (date night) but it all suddenly added up very quickly. And that’s WITH our Brat Experiment brains noticing what and where we are spending. It really drove home for us how easy it is to spend a significant amount of money with very, very little effort. To give you an idea, this is where our money went:

Necessary Indulgent
taxi to homeplus 3600 coffee 6400
Kimbap (dinner) 13000 movie 20000
taxi home 2900 ice cream 2800
popcorn & beer 11500

So really, not that much splashing out on stuff or that indulgent. Ok, the popcorn and beer were indulgent. But we just had to do it because nowhere else in the world (that we know of!) can you drink beer in the movie house 🙂 Also, we average 1 movie a year so on the rare occasion that we do go, we feel ok about purchasing an exorbitantly priced snack or two 😉 But it’s amazing how quickly-quickly everything adds up. Made us really grateful for Our Brat Experiment because we shudder to think how much money we would be spending (with little to show for it!) without it.

Now let’s look at how this all fits into our plan for this month:

week-37a

I cannot believe that we still have so much left for this month!! Especially since we only have one week left in Korea before we head to Thailand 🙂 But of course bills are coming off at the end of this week and having friends this weekend will result in more spending than usual… but all in all, it is WONDERFUL to have some breathing room leading into the last week of the month 🙂

Xxx
